14 Tips to Help You See Success with Your Emails
While some predicted the death of email marketing not long ago, its growth and effectiveness is unprecedented but it’s not always easy to know what to do to fully take advantage of this powerful marketing tool. I want to share 14 email marketing tips that should help you see greater success as you venture in to this somewhat obscure marketing tool.
Email marketing can even be complicated when using an email marketing service unless you understand a few email marketing tips.
Tip #1 – Obvious Calls to Action
Of course, you want to drive traffic to your landing page, product page or your Website with your emails because without that, it’s difficult to convert those on your email list to customers. With that in mind, make sure you’re making where you want the user to click as obvious as possible. Make links look like links and images or buttons stand out so those looking at the email don’t have to search for a button or a text link to click on in order to get to where you want them to get to.
The more obvious your call to action is, the more likely people are to use it and visit where you want them to visit.
Tip #2 – Limit Use of Images
Just about everyone wants to send a beautiful, image-rich email to those people who are on their list, but keep in mind, most of your recipients won’t initially see the images unless they turn them on. Using a great html design that’s coded in a way that looks great with or without images can really help your click-through rate whether or not your recipients view the images.
While images can enhance and make an email look great, keep in mind they should be used sparingly and NEVER MAKE YOUR CALL TO ACTION AN IMAGE ONLY.
Tip #3 – Let Your Subscribers Go
This one may be difficult to believe initially, but if you’re sending emails, you need to make it as easy as possible for your subscribers to unsubscribe because if they can’t, you may get listed as spam. And ever time you get hit with the spam button, your sender reputation drops making it more difficult to get your messages to the inbox.
In every email you send, make it easy for your subscribers to get off the list as easily as possible. Remember it may not sound like a great idea, but it’s much better than the alternative for those who aren’t interested in your emails any longer.
Tip #4 – Follow Spam Tips Closely
You don’t want to spam anyone and especially not your customers, they will turn against you and it could completely ruin your email marketing efforts. It’s a good idea to stay up to date with best practices when it comes to email to avoid sending spam. Just remember to be who you say you are, match your subject line with your content, include your physical address (p.o box works), let recipients know how to unsubscribe and take them off the list when they do.
Tip #5 – Maximize Your Space
When it comes to email, you don’t always have a lot of space, especially on mobile devices. Keep your emails to a minimum width of 700 pixels and be sure to include a clear, obvious call to action within the first 100 pixels of the email.
It’s a good idea to design for what your email will look like with only 350×200 pixels showing without the images loaded. This will be close to what people see on mobile devices but should also flow with the rest of the email.
Tip #6 – Keep Your Copy Short and Understandable
With the amount of email people get these days, some emails go unopened and the ones that are opened get less attention. It’s a good idea to keep you content short, concise and clear. To get your message across quickly, you can use bullet points or short, very small paragraphs.
Tip #7 – Keep Your List Tidy
Bad email addresses can damage you email marketing almost as much as recipients hitting the spam button. Email addresses that aren’t formatted incorrectly don’t even get delivered and a high percentage can lead email providers marking your emails as spam. If you’re serious about long-term successful email marketing, it’s vital to keep your list as clean as possible.
Tip #8 – Optimize Your Code
With the way most email providers leave images off initially, maximizing what users do see is a great way to get more out of your email marketing. When you do use images, make sure to include both a title and alt text. You can also maximize the space the images are taking up by making them links. SO even if they don’t show, your subscribers still have a way to click through to your landing page.
Tip #9 – Don’t Hate Tests
Preparing for a test isn’t always fun, but testing is vital in email marketing. You’ll want to send test email before you send to your list to ensure all links work across different email providers. Find out which email provider a majority of your subscribers are using and always test on that provider. If you see any errors, you can go back and make any corrections and test again before anyone else gets your email.
You’ll also want to test subject lines, email creatives, send times and days to send on and even landing pages. The testing process is the best way to ensure you’re getting the most out of your email marketing efforts.
Tip #10 – Optimize Your Text Version
While you don’t have to send a text-only version of your email, you probably want to. There are still a significant amount of people who only get or want text emails. It’s becoming a popular practice on mobile phones especially so be sure to make a text version that is just as clear to understand with an obvious call to action as your html version.
Tip #11 – Ask Your Subscribers for Help
Feedback from your subscribers can be invaluable so ask for help but also ask your subscribers to add your sending email to their contact list. Remind users they can add you and that way they’ll be almost guaranteed to receive your email in their inbox.
Also ask for feedback on send times, offers or anything else. A great way to do so is to send a survey through autoresponders.
Tip #12 – Give of Yourself
We’ve all heard that it’s better to give than to receive, but when it comes to building your email list, you’ll get more if you give. Tailor a great offer for those who sign up for your email list and you’ll be able to build your list faster while helping push your customers closer to conversion.

Simply having a pop-up show that your subscribers are subscribed is a poor way to maximize your email marketing efforts. Instead, send subscribers to a landing page welcoming them and notifiying them to open their email where you can send an automatic email with whatever you are giving away. This ensures people who sign up open an email from you which will help your future messages get delivered to the inbox. Tip #14 – Keep Mobile in Mind
Mobile devices are being used more and more to check emails and many email marketers still haven’t responded to the trend. If you aren’t going to completely make your message responsive based on device it’s is looked at, at least utilize the most likely space recipients will look at. Create design that includes a call to action in the top left and a clear message in that 350×200 space without images.
